TANZANIA SUBTEAM

ABOUT THE TANZANIA PROJECT

Since the conception of our project in 2018, our team has been working to design and implement a solar powered irrigation system in Sunuka, Tanzania. Sunuka is currently unable to increase their agricultural output due to the limitations of the dry season. However our team's design will allow for increased water access and consequently increase crop yield. Since February 2018, we have travelled on two assessment trips to establish our relationship with the Sunuka community and retrieve the necessary irrigation data. Keeping in mind social, structural and economic feasibility our team evaluated potential water sources and irrigation distribution techniques, and has been working to finalize system plans. With implementation tentatively scheduled for summer 2022, our designs are currently being submitted for community approval and for additional analysis by irrigation experts. In the meantime, our team is working to maintain community relations and develop a universal irrigation system toolbox.

PROJECT TIMELINE

2018

SUMMER 2018

Project commences, our team traveled to Tanzania to complete our first assessment trip.

FALL 2018

Analysis of initial surveying and community data. Continued outreach and research with the community.

2019

SPRING 2019

Continued research, completed travel prep for our second assessment trip in Tanzania

FALL 2019

Tammo’s irrigation course; worked on designing three potential water irrigation systems

2020

SPRING 2020

Started implementation prep and worked on design review.

FALL 2020

Our team worked on developing a universal irrigation engineering toolbox while our design is submitted for approval.

2021

SPRING 2021

Our team carried out ferrocement and distribution research, and concrete scheduling.

SUMMER 2021

Due to COVID restricitons, we worked on remote implementation of the irrigation system.

2022

SPRING 2022

Our team worked on finalizing the remote implementation of the irrigation system

Fall 2022

Through the summer, ended intial stages of construction for the irrigation system in Tanzania implementing the storage tanks, piping, and solar panels

2023

SPRING 2023

Our team sent 5 members to Sunuka, Tanzania over Winter 2023 to monitor implementation and began work on designing an extension to the current system.

Fall 2023

Finalizing extensions to the system and is now beginning new project search.
